TV: What role will The Punisher play in Daredevil Season 2?
It’s a great time to be a superhero genre fan – DC and Warner Bros are absolutely hammering the small screen and making waves on the big screen, whilst Marvel is doing what it does best – by taking names and getting the job done.
A few days ago Marvel announced that Jon Bernthal would play their recently acquired Punisher in the second season of Daredevil on Netflix. Bernthal shot to fame by AMC’s The Walking Dead has become one of the best character actors in the business but more importantly he is one of the best supporting characters operating right now – turning in solid performances in The Wolf of Wall Street and Fury.
And this is the genius of the situation – Bernthal is a supporting genius and The Punisher is made to be a stellar supporting character. The recently unveiled Daredevil season 2 logo hints at tension and conflict between the brutal and bloody Punisher and Charlie Cox’s stoic Daredevil.
The Punisher is The Punisher – in other words, Frank Castle is a damaged and ruthless vigilante and after all the justice and the killing he is still damaged and ruthless. The Punisher is set in his ways and for this reason alone he should provide the perfect opposite and be the perfect foil to the ever-evolving Matt Murdock.
Many have hypothesised that Bernthal’s Punisher will actually be the villain of Daredevil season 2 – having faced off in the comics before – and then become an ally by season’s end. However, I am under the assumption that The Punisher will be a solid supporting character that carries weight over a three-episode arc whilst Bullseye and Elektra take center stage for the rest of the series.
Daredevil season 1 – of which I reviewed all episodes on this blog – was a delightfully slow burn with entirely brilliant direction and writing. Its sophomore season has its work cut out for it if it wants to reach the same level of grit as the first.
