Second in Everything

Second in Everything

All my life I’ve been mocking myself

Chasing wins in pursuit of a stacked shelf

Worked smart and fought firm

Day after day, term after term

Only to realise; there is always someone better

Someone luckier and someone fitter

First to be commanded

Second always to be tested

Hand rises up in search of answers

Overlooked. Beggars can’t be choosers

Shoulder never used

Personality attacked and abused

Those closest to you don’t care

Second isn’t hell, third place beware

Forget second place

It’s oh so close but still a disgrace

Don’t fly too close to the sun

Be reasonable and get the job done

Set and aim your sights low

When you fall, it wont be a hefty blow
